Sugar was first produced in India in ancient times. The rest of the world mostly used honey as a sweetener. They discovered a method for turning sugarcane juice into granulated crystals that were much easier to transport. The word for these crystals was khanda from which we get the name candy. Now, we enjoy sugar cubes in our coffee, powdered sugar on our donuts, a sprinkle of sugar on strawberries or breakfast cereal.
